Northern Beaches Hospital is seeking an experienced and motivated Stroke Clinical Nurse Consultant (CNC) to provide expert clinical leadership and drive excellence in stroke care across our acute stroke service (Ward 4A). This pivotal role works collaboratively across the organisation to deliver evidence‑based, patient‑centred stroke care and support the ongoing development of a high‑performing multidisciplinary team.

About the Role

The Stroke CNC provides expert clinical advice, leadership, coordination and consultancy across the continuum of stroke care. In alignment with the Position Description, the role:

  • Leads planning, development, implementation and evaluation of stroke pathways and clinical standards.
  • Provides advanced clinical assessment and support to patients, carers, and clinical teams, ensuring evidence‑based practice and best‑practice stroke management.
  • Coordinates patient care from admission through discharge, ensuring timely intervention and safe transitions, including community and outpatient follow‑up.
  • Delivers education to nursing staff, allied health, patients and carers, and contributes to hospital‑wide stroke education programs.
  • Works collaboratively with ED, VMOs, Neurology, Acute Stroke Unit, Allied Health and community partners to streamline care and support hospital‑avoidance strategies.
  • Participates in clinical research, audit and data analysis, supporting the development and advancement of stroke services.
  • Supports NSQHS compliance, quality improvement, WHS and service excellence initiatives.

Key Responsibilities

Clinical Leadership & Care Delivery

  • Provide high‑level expertise in stroke nursing and act as a clinical role model.
  • Ensure adherence to AHPRA codes, standards, and professional boundaries.
  • Manage complex patients and coordinate multidisciplinary care plans.

Education & Professional Development

  • Develop and provide specialised education programs for staff.
  • Create patient and carer education resources.
  • Support professional development and mentor nursing staff.

Quality, Research & Service Improvement

  • Lead or participate in quality projects, audits, and policy development.
  • Promote evidence‑based practice and support accreditation and safety initiatives.
  • Contribute to research, data interpretation and stroke‑related service planning.

Collaboration & Communication

  • Facilitate effective communication across departments and external providers.
  • Maintain comprehensive and accurate clinical documentation.
  • Promote positive multidisciplinary teamwork and support new and existing staff.

Work Health & Safety / Service Excellence

  • Ensure WHS standards are upheld, risks identified and incidents reported.
  • Contribute to a culture of patient‑centred care, professionalism and service excellence.

Selection Criteria

Essential

  • Current AHPRA registration as a Registered Nurse.
  • Bachelor of Nursing (or equivalent).
  • Postgraduate qualification in neurology/stroke nursing (or working towards).
  • Minimum 5 years post‑registration experience, with at least 3 years in stroke/neurology.
  • Demonstrated experience in leading clinical practice, service development and evidence‑based care.
  • High‑level leadership, communication, analytical and problem‑solving skills.
  • Ability to work autonomously and collaboratively in multidisciplinary teams.
  • Demonstrated commitment to quality improvement, education, research and patient‑centred care.
  • Strong IT literacy and documentation skills.

Desirable

  • Research experience and/or publication involvement.

If you are successful in the role, you will receive a salary based on your years of relevant registered nursing experience against the current Healthscope and NSWNMA/ANMF – NSW Nurses and Midwives’ – Enterprise Agreement 2024, a salary ranging from $70.23 – 73.10 per hour.
