Expression of Interest – VMO Clinical Haematology
Northern Beaches Hospital (NBH) is currently seeking expressions of interest for the position of Visiting Medical Officer, Clinical Hematology.
As a valued member of our Haematology team, you will provide expertise in the clinical management and treatment of patients in the Northern Beaches Hospital (NBH) Haematology Unit, whilst maintaining safe, effective and professional care for hematology patients within the Northern Beaches community. You will provide support and promote seamless continuity of care between inpatient and outpatient services.
Key responsibilities:
· To provide inpatient and outpatient services and deliver clinical care to patients that is evidence based and patient centered and to provide consultation services to patients as requested by other specialties;
· To participate in an on-call roster (including weekends and public holidays) and associated duties as required, and participate in meetings and committees as requested by the Head of Unit and/or Director of Medical Services;
· To participate in consolidating current services and actively participate in initiatives to promote growth, enhance the reputation and help identify clinical areas for expansion in the department;
· To provide leadership to the junior clinical staff of the service and undertake training and education of junior medical staff and registrars and ensure they are well supported;
· Maintain professional knowledge through a commitment to ongoing learning and continuing professional development;
· Visiting Medical Officers are required to work as part of the health care team, adhere to Healthscope By-Laws and NBH policies and procedures, participate in working groups (as required), demonstrate a commitment to quality improvement through National Safety and Quality Health Service (NSQHS) Standards & EQuIPNational, Work Health and Safety (WHS) and maintain NBH accreditation.
To be successful in the role you will:
· Hold a medical degree (MBBS or equivalent) and be registrable with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA);
· Hold Fellowship of the Royal Australasian College of Physicians (FRACP) and the Royal College of Pathologists of Australia (FRCPA), in Haematology;
· Demonstrate recent clinical and laboratory experience as a Haematologist in roles of similar scope to the haematology service at Northern Beaches Hospital, and a commitment to developing integrated clinical and laboratory services to optimise delivery of high quality patient care;
· Demonstrate a clear understanding of issues relating to professional practice, clinical governance, clinical ethics, clinical teaching and clinical leadership;
- Demonstrate a high level of competence in interpersonal skills and effective communication with staff of the hospital including senior medical officers, Junior Medical staff and members of the multi-disciplinary team both medical and non-medical, and with patients and their families, as well as proficiency in the use of information technology;
- Demonstrate a commitment to teaching, continuing education, research and quality improvement.

Key Responsibility 1 | Clinical Care |
Performance Criteria 1 | Provide a Haematology service consistent within the defined scope of practice for NBH – nominally Schedule 14 of the Project Deed for public patients and as may change from time with respect to the Annual Notice issued by the NSLHD; and in accordance with additional services approved by the NBH Executive to be provided for private patients. Provide a consultation service as required by other specialties/Senior Medical Officers. Participate in an on call roster as determined by the Head of Unit or Clinical Director as approved by the Chief Medical Officer or CEO; when on call, must be within accessible distance in order to respond to urgent and precipitous events. Liaise with other health professions involved in patient management and care Comply with NBH / Healthscope / Ministry of Health/NSLHD clinical policies as applicable Supervise and commit to accurate documentation in and completion of medical records to reflect clinical decisions, tests, procedures and discharge diagnoses Comply with patient admission and discharge policies: including documentation, planning of admission/discharge, day of procedure admission, timely discharge. Supervision of junior staff in the provision of care, including formal handover, communication between clinicians with deteriorating patients, and meet standards of care. Provide clinical management and timely treatment of patients under your care both as an inpatient Perform ward rounds as required for inpatient care as far as possible within the normal working hours (8am – 5pm) Ensure appropriate arrangements are made for patients on discharge from hospital to maximise continuity of care and good health outcomes. Liaise with patient family and carers as appropriate Liaison with community health services and other government and non-government agencies in the coordinated provision of care For private patients under the care of the VMO – they are their primary carer – in the case of acute patients, must see the patient every day; in the case of chronic patients, must see patients a minimum of three occasions in seven days |

Performance Criteria 6 | Implement measures to maintain the safety of staff, doctors, visitors and self by: · Complying with Healthscope and NBH’s WHS policy, infection control standards and other relevant policies and procedures · Ensuring a safe working environment and safe systems of work · Using equipment and material safety data sheets for safe management of all solutions/chemicals used within department · Attending WHS mandatory training · Assisting where required with education/training and supervision to ensure staff are safe from injury and risks to health · Identifying, investigating and reporting in Riskman all hazards and incidents immediately · Assisting in completing all workplace inspections per schedule including identifications and actions for improvements as required · Reporting any staff injuries, risks and hazards to the Chief Medical Officer and WHS representatives immediately · Reporting and completing maintenance referrals as identified · Participate in waste management programs for the reduction and recycling of waste in order to support environmental sustainability. |

Appraisal | Appraisal performed at 3 months from commencement of position and then annually; or when there is a change of position or any time there is a need to review performance.
